Ingredients

2 cups flour

2 cups sugar

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup (one stick) butter

4 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 cup water

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon each, baking soda, cinnamon, vanilla

2 slightly beaten eggs

Preparation

Prepare a 9x13 pan and heat oven to 400 F.

Mix flour and sugar in a large bowl. Bring shortening, butter and water, along with cocoa powder, to a boil in a saucepan over medium high heat. Remove from heat and cool slightly.

Mix buttermilk, baking soda, cinnamon, vanilla in a small bowl.

Pour butter mixture over flour mixture and stir along with buttermilk mixture. Add eggs and mix dough until just blended. Don’t overmix, or the cake texture will be tough.

Pour dough into prepared pan and bake for 30 min. Frost with Shirley’s frosting.
