Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup dark molasses

1/4 cup water

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flower

3/4 t salt

1/2 t baking soda

3/4 t ginger

1/4 t nutmeg

1/8 t allspice

1 t cinnamon

1 pinch cloves

Preparation

Cream shortening and sugar. Blend in molasses, water, flour, salt, soda, ginger, nutmeg and all-spice. Cover; chill 2-3 hours

heat oven to 375. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick in lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut and place on ungreased baking sheet.

Bake 10-12 minutes. Immediately remove from baking sheet.

(for crisper cookies roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Bake for 8 minutes.)
