Ingredients

Dough:

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 1/2 T sugar

3/4 tsp salt

1 cup chilled solid vegetable shortening, cut into 1" cubes

6 T ice water

Filling:

12 oz frozen blackberries (do not thaw)

1 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1 egg beaten with 1 T water for glaze

Vegetable oil for frying

Powdered sugar

Vanilla ice cream

Preparation

Dough: Wisk flour, sugar and salt in food processor. Add shortening and pulse until coarse meal forms. Add ice water, 1 T at a time until moist clumps form and it forms a ball. Form into disk, wrap in plastic, and chill 2 hours. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface and create 6 rounds of dough. Transfer rounds to rimmed baking sheet, layering between sheets of waxed paper. Cover and chill one hour.

Filling: Mix berries, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in bowl. Let stand 5 minutes; stir again. Place one dough round on lightly floured surface and brush with glaze. Spoon 1/2 cup filling into center. Fold sides over filling, pinching tightly to seal. Repeat with remaining filling and rounds.

Heat oil In fryer or skillet to 330-340 degrees. Cook pies, 2 at a time, until deep golden brown, 7-8 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream.
